There is et there are, dire il y a

A1A2Niveaux Débutant, Élémentaire.Par , publié le

En bref

En anglais, « il y a » se dit there is devant un nom singulier ou indénombrable (there's a problem) et there are devant un pluriel (there are two problems). Au passé, on dit there was et there were.

There are est la même tournure devant un nom pluriel : there are three pharmacies.

There are ne se contracte pas à l'écrit, même si l'on entend there're à l'oral.

  • There's a good bakery opposite the station.
  • There's too much sugar in this recipe. (sugar est indénombrable)
  • There are two meetings this afternoon.

There's a desk and two chairs in the room. En conversation, on entend aussi there's devant un pluriel (there's lots of people), mais à l'écrit, gardez there are.

Négation et question

There is et there are à l'affirmative, à la négative et à la question
Singulier ou indénombrablePluriel
AffirmationThere's a lift.There are two lifts.
NégationThere isn't a lift. / There's no lift.There aren't any lifts. / There are no lifts.
QuestionIs there a lift? Are there any lifts?
Réponse courteYes, there is. / No, there isn't.Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.

Dans la réponse courte affirmative, on ne contracte pas : Yes, there is, jamais Yes, there's. À la négative, any accompagne le pluriel et l'indénombrable (there isn't any bread), voir some et any. Pour demander une quantité, on dit How many… are there? ou How much… is there?, comme dans much et many.

Au passé et au futur

Seul le verbe be change de temps, there reste en place. L'accord suit la même règle.

  • There was a long queue at passport control.
  • There were no taxis outside the hotel.
  • There's been an accident on the ring road. (present perfect, la nouvelle est récente)
  • There will be a short break at eleven.
  • There might be a delay, so bring a book.

There ou it

There is présente une chose pour la première fois. Ensuite, pour en parler, on la reprend par it ou they.

  • There's a café on the corner. It opens at seven.
  • There are some new rules at work. They start on Monday.

Pour une distance, l'anglais emploie it : It's ten kilometres to the coast.
